Collecting Equipment and Tools for Haiti
December 20, 2011
More than 15 years ago, John Shattuck learned about Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH, Spanish for “Our Little Brothers and Sisters”) and NPH USA through St. Elizabeth Seton Church in Orland Hills, IL. He immediately decided to help support NPH/Friends' work to transform the lives of orphaned, abandoned and disadvantaged children in Latin America and the Caribbean. Today, in addition to serving as Vice Chair of the Friends Midwest Region Board of Directors, John coordinates the collection and delivery of supplies for the NPH homes.
Prior to the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, John had been to NPH Haiti twice. The first time was to assess the need for medical supplies. Through his association with an organization by the name of Children of Abraham, John was instrumental in securing roughly $1.4 million in medical supply gifts in kind for the NPH homes in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua that were sent in the summer of 2009.
After the earthquake, John returned to Haiti to deliver emergency supplies, and he has made additional trips since then. Now he is focused on equipment and tools for a newly constructed music school, trade school and hospital.
