Create a spark! Support Proyecto Chispa
(Project Spark), a new initiative aimed at encouraging the education of the children of Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH, Spanish for “Our Little Brothers and Sisters”) homes by providing them access to computers and technology. Only through education will the NPH children be able to break the cycle of poverty, and Chispa is helping them do that.
As part of the project, we are collecting and recycling (free of charge
) old computers, cell phones and other electronics and using the resale from recycling the parts to purchase new computers for the NPH homes. Our goal is to raise $24,300 to purchase computers to serve over 220 middle school children!
It’s the hope that these computers will serve as the “chispa” or spark for the children in the NPH homes to continue learning at the highest level possible.
was created by Elizabeth O’Day, a PhD student at Harvard Medical School, who sponsors a child, Ana Maria, at NPH Mexico. After visiting Ana, Elizabeth decided she wanted to do something more and she created Proyecto Chispa. In less than a year, Proyecto Chispa
has sent over 90 computers to the NPH homes. Because of Chispa
donations, NPH Mexico was able to increase its computer capacity by 400%. The immediate success of Chispa
is readily apparent; NPH students can now do their homework, type reports, and play on computers, but what is truly unique about Chispa is that the long-term benefits this program offers is limitless. All it takes is a spark! Please support Proyecto Chispa!
Each year, the Proyecto Chispa
group will focus on one NPH home and plans to travel to the home to set up the computers and install additional educational games. Our first “Chispa
Learning Center” will be in Miacatlán, Mexico, where we hope to integrate computers and technology into the lives of our younger children.
